Talis was engaged by the City of Canning to prepare detailed design documentation for the revitalisation of Burrendah Boulevard in front of Southlands Shopping Centre and Willetton Basketball Stadium. The City redeveloped the area to create a more urban environment which is suitable for all traffic (cyclists, pedestrians, vehicles). The redevelopment included kerb extensions, amendments to bus bays, raised central medians, consolidating pedestrian crossing points, closure of turning lanes and adjustments to existing crossovers. Talis included a Water Sensitive Urban Design solution which included rain gardens, flush mountable kerbs, and underground infiltration cells.
Talis’ scope of involvement included:
- Detailed design drawings suitable for tender and subsequently, Issue for Construction;
- Lighting design;
- MRWA and PTA Approvals;
- Schedule of quantities for all works; and
- Technical Specifications
KEY CHALLENGES
The project is within a brownfield site which required careful consideration of competing constraints. The design had to consider the interface with the shopping centre, as well as the proposed development of the Willetton Sporting Complex.
Additionally, the existing stormwater infrastructure needed investigation and consolidation. The objective was to utilise the existing drainage infrastructure, but redirect the flows towards the new underground infiltration cells.
OUTCOMES
Talis has completed the design and the City has now constructed the project. There were constraints working in a brownfield site which created several complexities. Talis’ design process identified these constraints early in the process and the City has been able to undertake the construction of the redevelopment smoothly without issues.
