Funding Application Strategies for Shoalhaven Rubber Crumb Plant

| 2 min read

As experienced waste strategy and circular economy consultants, Talis has a strong track record of assisting local governments, industries, and other clients secure funding for sustainability initiatives.

We have successfully prepared funding applications for several projects, including the Shoalhaven Rubber Crumb Plant. Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips officially opened the plant at Shoalhaven City Council’s West Nowra Recycling and Waste Depot in NSW on September 19th, 2024.

Funding Application Experience

In 2022, the Shoalhaven City Council received a $514,000 grant, co-funded by the Federal Government’s Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) and NSW’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, to launch this project.

Talis is proud to have supported the Council by developing tailored application strategies that highlighted the project’s alignment with program goals. The proposed plant was presented as a key solution for repurposing and extending the life of tyres, further enhancing the Council’s circular economy.

Our strength lies in preparing comprehensive and compelling grant applications, complete with all necessary documentation. Our consultants began with an initial consultation to understand the project objectives.

We then crafted a compelling narrative, detailed project plans, and engaged with relevant partners to strengthen the application. Finally, we ensured the completeness and accuracy of the submission and provided ongoing support throughout the application review process.

Shoalhaven’s New Rubber Crumb Plant

The new plant, one of the few of its kind in Australia, produces crumbed rubber and mesh powder. These materials are ready for use in local infrastructure projects, serving as a sustainable polymer replacement in asphalts and bitumen.

Tyres once destined for disposal are now being transformed into valuable resources for road paving, artificial turf, and children’s playgrounds.

The crumbing technology utilised in this facility removes 99% of all contaminants, resulting in a remarkably high purity product that is appealing to the recycled products market. It also enables Council to increase the amount of waste rubber materials and regional tyres it recycles from 58 tonnes each year to 160 tonnes, with potential to increase to 270 tonnes per year.

The Council is committed to boosting landfill diversion rates in line with the NSW Government’s ambitious target of an 80% average recovery rate from all waste streams by 2030. Talis is grateful for the opportunity to provide advice and services that support this important initiative.
