In many regional and Aboriginal communities, landfill remains the primary waste management option. The Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 highlights several significant waste-related challenges these communities face, including:
– Illegal dumping and contamination
– Barriers to developing landfills
– Limited access to recycling

To tackle these issues, improving access to waste infrastructure and services is crucial. The State Waste Strategy underscores the need for a focus on waste avoidance and recycling.

The Department of Communities WA, through the Remote Essential and Municipal Services program (REMS), and on behalf of the State, provides landfill facilities to remote Aboriginal communities across Western Australia.

Talis has been commissioned by the Department of Communities to redevelop a landfill trench design template to assist in the construction of landfill facilities within remote Aboriginal communities that are in line with the latest better practice design, construction, operation and closure principles.

This project presents exciting challenges as the template must be versatile enough to accommodate diverse community sizes and locations, including new landfills and the extension of existing landfills.

The ultimate goal is to ensure that the landfill design documentation is fit-for-purpose for different scenarios while maintaining compliance with current industry standards/regulations and mitigating environmental impact risks where possible.
